Yes, a $29 TEFL course can be legitimate. The price alone can’t tell you either way: what matters is whether you can check what the course claims. simpleTEFL’s 120-hour course costs US$29, and this page shows you how to check each of its claims yourself, in about five minutes.
Cheap courses have a bad name for some good reasons. Some advertise 120 hours of content that takes an afternoon to read, name an accreditor you can’t find anywhere, or charge for the certificate once you’ve finished. Below are the checks that catch those problems, followed by the evidence for each one on our own course, including what US$29 doesn’t get you.
We run simpleTEFL, so this page is our evidence, not an independent review. Wherever we can, we link to a source we don’t control so that you can check it yourself. Facts and review counts were checked on 24 October 2026.
How can you tell if a cheap TEFL course is legit?
Ask six questions. A legitimate course answers each of them on its own website and lets you confirm the important ones somewhere else.
Six checks for any cheap TEFL course
- Is the course on the accreditor’s own list? “Internationally accredited” means little until the accrediting body names the provider on its own website.
- Is there a real company behind it? Look for a registered company name and number that you can search on a government register.
- Do the 120 hours look like 120 hours? Read the syllabus. A list of topics with a few pages on each won’t take 120 hours, or prepare you to teach.
- What will the certificate really cost? Check whether the digital certificate, retakes, verification and extra study time are included, or charged after you finish.
- Can an employer verify the certificate? A certificate ID that employers can check online protects you as well as them.
- What do reviewers say, and how many are there? Look at the number of reviews and their dates on independent review sites, not only at the quotes on the course’s own pages.
None of these checks depends on the price. An expensive course can fail them, and a cheap one can pass them. Our certification guide explains how to tell whether an accreditor is real.
Is simpleTEFL legit? Check the evidence
Yes. simpleTEFL is run by SIMPLETEFL LTD, an active UK company, and its 120-hour course is accredited by ACCREDITAT. You can confirm both, and more, on websites we don’t run:
| What to check | What you'll find |
|---|---|
| The company | Companies House, the UK government's register, lists SIMPLETEFL LTD, company number 15466925, as active |
| Registration as a learning provider | The UK Register of Learning Providers lists SIMPLETEFL LTD under UKPRN 10094815 |
| Accreditation | ACCREDITAT lists simpleTEFL on its client page |
| Reviews | 4.8 from 116 reviews on Trustpilot, and 4.96 from 23 reviews on Go Overseas |
| Certificates | Our verification page shows the course and issue date for a certificate ID and last name |
| Refunds | Our refund policy gives you 30 days, if you've completed less than 20% of the course and no certificate has been issued |
Check them here: Companies House, UK Register of Learning Providers, ACCREDITAT’s client list, Trustpilot, Go Overseas, our certificate verification and our refund policy. Review counts checked on 24 October 2026.
Each source proves something different. Companies House and the UK Register of Learning Providers confirm who we are and where we’re based; they don’t assess the course. ACCREDITAT is an independent TEFL/TESOL accrediting body that has reviewed our course. It is not a government regulator, and our course is not an Ofqual-regulated qualification. The reviews tell you what graduates experienced. Read our accreditation details

What do the 120 hours cover, and how are you assessed?
The course covers TEFL foundations, grammar, tenses and sentence structure, classroom management, the four language skills with pronunciation, and lesson planning. You can open each module on the course page and see what it covers before you pay.
You’re assessed by online quizzes and assessments, which are marked automatically, and you can retake them as many times as you need. They mix multiple-choice, matching, categorising and true/false questions. Your certificate is issued once you’ve completed the course and passed every assessment. There are no assignments marked by a tutor, and no observed teaching practice.
That is the main thing US$29 doesn’t buy. More expensive courses often add assignments marked by a tutor, and some add teaching practice observed by a trainer. If a job you want asks for either, our course on its own won’t meet that requirement.
Unlimited retakes mean you never pay a resit fee, and a failed quiz can’t lock you out of your certificate.
What support do you get for $29?
Tutor support and job support are both included in the US$29 price, and you reach both by email. In practice, that means:
- Help while you study: email us with questions about the course material.
- CV and application feedback: send us your CV or application when you’re getting ready to apply for teaching work.
- Job leads on request: tell us what you’re looking for and we’ll share opportunities we know about.
We don’t run live classes, and we don’t place graduates in jobs. Support is there when you ask for it.
Are there any hidden fees?
No. Here is everything a simpleTEFL student might pay for:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| 120-hour course | US$29, one time |
| Digital certificate (PDF) after successful completion | Included |
| Online verification for employers | Free |
| Assessment retakes | Included, unlimited |
| Access to course materials | Lifetime, with no extension fees |
| Tutor and job support | Included |
| Printed certificate | Optional, US$25 plus delivery |
| Apostille for a visa, through our partner Hague Apostille | Optional extra, only if your visa needs it |
You only pay more if you choose a printed copy, or if your visa needs your certificate legalised. Check what your employer or visa application asks for before you order either. Certificate and apostille details
Why does it only cost $29?
We keep our costs low and pass the savings on. We’re a small team that works remotely, and the course is delivered entirely online. We don’t run live classes or observed teaching practice, which are among the most expensive parts of higher-priced courses to provide.
When should you pay more than $29?
A US$29 course isn’t the right choice for everyone. Pay for a different course if:
- an employer or visa asks for a specific qualification, such as a regulated Level 5 TEFL, CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL;
- a job asks for observed teaching practice, or for lesson plans assessed by a tutor;
- you want live classes, or a tutor to mark your written work.
Our course is not a Level 5 qualification, and we don’t guarantee that you’ll find a job. For many entry-level jobs online and abroad that ask for an accredited 120-hour TEFL, though, it does the job. Our TEFL certification guide explains which qualification suits which goal.
The course has a 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible purchases; the refund policy explains the conditions.
